What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people focus, control impulses, and regulate activity levels. It’s lifelong, but how it shows up can vary widely depending on age, gender, life circumstances and support.

Having ADHD doesn’t mean someone can’t succeed. Many people with ADHD are creative, energetic, and hyper-focused when doing something that truly interests them.

ADHD isn’t ‘just bad behaviour’ or laziness. It’s rooted in brain differences in areas such as attention, executive function (planning, organising, shifting focus) and impulse control.

Types of ADHD

We use current diagnostic models to identify the main presentations of ADHD:

Predominantly Inattentive
You may have difficulty focusing, completing tasks, and following instructions. You are forgetful, disorganised, and easily distracted.

Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive
You may be restless, fidgety, have difficulty staying seated, talk excessively and interrupt others, act without thinking, and make impulsive decisions without considering consequences.

Combined Presentation
This type includes symptoms from both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. You may experience challenges from both categories.

Each person’s experience may vary over time and across situations: you might notice more inattentive symptoms in work or study settings, and more hyperactive/impulsive ones in social or home environments.

Symptoms of ADHD

ADHD can look different in different people, but some common signs include:

Inattention symptoms

  • Trouble staying focused on tasks or conversations
  • Frequent careless mistakes, losing items, and forgetting appointments
  • Difficulty organising work or managing time
  • Avoidance of tasks that require sustained mental effort
  • Easily distracted by external stimuli or unrelated thoughts

Hyperactivity / Impulsivity symptoms

  • Fidgeting, restlessness, tapping feet or fingers
  • Difficulty staying seated or quiet when expected
  • Talking excessively, interrupting, and blurting out answers
  • Trouble waiting for one’s turn, rushing into things without thinking

It’s important to remember: having some of these occasionally doesn’t mean ADHD. Diagnosis depends on the duration, the setting – e.g. home, school/work, social life and degree of impairment in daily functioning.

Child ADHD Diagnosis

ADHD in Children

In children, ADHD often shows as high energy, difficulty settling down, forgetfulness, distractibility, or impulsive behaviour. You might notice:

  • Struggles to follow multi-step instructions or complete homework
  • Frequent shifts of attention, jumping from one activity to another
  • Difficulty waiting or taking turns, blurting out replies
  • Emotional reactivity or frustration when demands increase
  • Trouble playing quietly, always ‘on the go’ or climbing – even when it’s not appropriate

Early assessment can help children get access to strategies, educational support and structure to thrive – rather than just getting labelled as ‘bad behaved’ or ‘lazy’.

Adult ADHD Diagnosis

ADHD in Adults

In adults, ADHD can present quite differently. Some adults discover their ADHD only later in life, after years of under-achievement, missed deadlines, relationship difficulties or anxiety/depression. Common adult experiences include:

  • Chronic lateness or disorganisation (e.g. missing appointments, losing paperwork)
  • Difficulty switching between tasks or finishing long projects
  • Procrastination, or starting many things but struggling to complete them
  • Impulsivity in spending, decision-making, or interrupting conversations
  • Restlessness, trouble relaxing, ‘in the head’ hyperactivity
  • Low self-esteem, existential frustration or ‘why can’t I just be normal’ distress

An adult diagnosis can bring clarity, self-compassion and access to practical tools such as time-management strategies, coaching, therapy or medication where appropriate.

Mark your answers on both Part A and Part B of the Symptom Checklist Score.

If four or more marks appear in the darkly shaded boxes in Part A then you have symptoms highly consistent with ADHD in adults and further investigation is warranted.

The frequency scores on Part B provide additional cues.
